Sunday Notes: Songs of Christmas: Mary’s Song Luke 1:46-55
- (Luk 1:46 ESV) And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,
- My soul
- Psychē – psoo-khay’
- It is used of one’s very life
- Of the breath in your lungs
- And in this instance it is the seat of your feelings
- Magnifies The Lord
- To esteem highly
- To make great
- Mary’s feelings
- Her desire
- Her Affections
- All esteem God
- Her heart seeks that God be glorified
- 1 Sam 2:1-10
- God did not choose those who one would likely expect He chose Mary
- Luke 1:28-30, Matthew 23:1-12, Psalm 34:2-3
- (Luk 1:47 ESV) and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
- (Luk 1:48 ESV) for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
- (Luk 1:49 ESV) for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
- My spirit
- Spirit: pneuma
- Pneuma is the rational spirit
- Rejoices
- Agalliaō – ag-al-lee-ah’-o
- Different from magnifies
- Agalliaō is to exult
- To rejoice exceedingly
- To be exceedingly glad
- Mary rejoices
- Not in the things of the world but in God
- His servant – doule
- Same word as before: Female slave
- For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed
- And they have
- This humble girl
- From a no where town
- And no name family
- Chosen to be the one who would bear the Messiah
- Malachi 3:11-12, Psalm 138:1-8, Ephesians 3:14-21
- (Luk 1:50 ESV) And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.
- Again, understand the fear of the Lord
- This not horror
- Genesis 17:7 is the Abrahamic Covenant
- That fulfillment happens in Mary’s womb
- Jesus, the branch of David
- The Messiah come
- Who will forever reign
- And be a blessing to all generations
- Malachi 3:16-18, Psalm 103
- Hear the praise of David
- Hear the praise of Mary
- Praising God for His mercy
- For His protection
- For His promises kept
- For His will.
- Bless the Lord
- Who is good to us in His love
- And great for us in His power.
- (Luk 1:51 ESV) He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
- (Luk 1:52 ESV) he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate;
- We might not connect with this the same way in our time of freedom
- No one is killing us for worshiping
- Mary lived her entire life under the Roman government
- A pagan society with no regard to God’s desires
- And a sideways Jewish religion
- That long ago scrapped the one true God for their man made version of things
- Yet God
- Through that and all the generations remained faithful to His people
- Like Elizabeth
- Like Mary
- Like God did all throughout history
- And as He does today.
- (Luk 1:53 ESV) he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.
- (Luk 1:54 ESV) He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,
- (Luk 1:55 ESV) as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”
- He has filled the hungry with good things
- That word hungry
- This is talking of a spiritual hunger
- A hunger for the things of God
- A hunger for His Word
- A desire to know Him more.
- Do you feel that?
- Matthew 5:6, Psalm 34:9-11
- o Abraham and to His offspring forever
- This is a repeating connection isn’t it?
- That the Jewish people long held to this promise of Abrahman
- Their patriarch
- Genesis 17:19 Mary sees the fulfillment
- Psalm 98:1-9, Psalm 103
- May our souls
- Like JTB
- Like Elizabeth
- Like Mary
- Bless the Lord
- Praise God for who He is
