Devotional: Genesis 1:9-10

Reflection

• Gen 1:9 ESV) And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.
• (Gen 1:10 ESV) God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

Discussion

Have you ever been assigned a position?  Maybe it was the catcher on your little league team?  Maybe the shift lead at your job?  Maybe it is the mother or father of a child?  Maybe an elected position in a government or on a board?

 

Assignment of a position shows that someone has a job to do – a responsibility to uphold.  The catcher on the baseball team is suppose to catch the ball and guard home plate.  Failing in that role might cost your team the game.

 

When we look at the creation account we see God naming things like light, earth, and the seas.  When God gives something a title or a name He is also assigning it a responsibility in His created order.  In these first few verses He is setting the stage for a functional universe to house the people He will create to worship Him.  Each part of the created universe has to function in its own purpose or all of creation suffers.

 

The same must be true of our lives, right?  If we play on a team and one member is out there doing their own thing, the whole team suffers.  If we work in a job and our co-worker fails in their portion, the whole project suffers.

Yet water, when uncontrolled, is the most destructive force on the earth.  What are a few things that too much water might cause?

 

Consider the purpose of the dry earth in our world.

What are a few things that dirt enables in our daily lives?

 

What does God’s creation of both dry earth and water for our world show us about His power, His grace, and His ability to provide for us?

 

Expansion

God the Father has eternally existed in the past and will eternally exist forever in the future.  He alone is the sovereign creator and supreme ruler of everything.  He is unchanging, omnipresent,  omnipotent, omniscient and entirely holy in every capacity.
