Devotional: Colossians 1:1-2

Reflection

  • Colossians 3:2
    • Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

Discussion

It is said that, “mindset is everything.”  That if you set your mind on something, you can achieve it no matter what.  We know that is false because you cannot set your mind on becoming a llama and achieve that.  Maybe becoming a llama is out of context.

It is important that we train our minds on correct things, isn’t it?  We can and we do focus our attention and energy into learning new things, mastering old things, and thinking about how things are supposed to be.  If we funnel that same energy into sinful areas we might find we are rather good at getting ourselves into trouble.  Likewise, setting our mines on the things of God points us to His righteousness.

As the old man in the fable said, “The wolf you feed is the one who will win.”  We are in a constant battle between the fleshly and the spiritual.  Between the things of the world and the things of God.  In Colossians 3:2 Paul is urging us to set our minds on the things above, the things of God and not on all the things of the world.

It is easier said than done, for sure.  When we are in the steaming pile that is the world and all the mess that brings to us, we will find it easier to assimilate to the things around us.  That is why it is so vital that we cling onto those set apart in Christ.

Connection

What is the absolute source of God’s pure revelation for us to set our minds on?

How can you work to focus your mind more on the things above and less on the things of the world?

How can your church help you to do this more?

How can you help others to do this more?
