1 Timothy 1:1-2

  • __________ writes this letter to Timothy, his child in the faith. (1 Timothy 1:1)
    • Paul was a __________ from Tarsus (Acts 21:39)
    • Paul was trained in the Jewish Religion by the famed Rabbi __________. (Acts 22:3)
    • He was __________ for the Jewish law (Acts 22:3)
    • He was born a __________ Citizen (Acts 22:28)
    • Paul was commissioned by the Jewish leaders to hunt down, arrest, and kill __________ (Acts 22:5)
    • He upheld the highest standards of Jewish life until his encounter with the risen Jesus on the road to __________ (Acts 22:6-20)
    • After that his entire life was changed and he was commissioned as the Apostle to the __________ (Acts 22:21)
    • But all these worldly accomplishments Paul counted as nothing in comparison to his relationship with __________ (Philippians 3:4-7)
  • An apostle is an office of the Christian church
    • It was held by 13 men, __________ being the anomaly
    • Each of them directly, personally commissioned by __________ himself.
  • Other offices of the Christian church include (Ephesians 4:11-12, 1 Corinthians 12:28)
    • Prophets
    • Evangelists
    • Shepherds/Teachers (Deacons/Elders)
  • Every office of the church is defined by God’s __________ for the purpose and qualification.
    • We have no right to shape these to our ability or desire.
    • The overall purpose of each is to: “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” Ephesians 4:12
  • Paul is writing to a struggling church in __________ where Timothy has been assigned. (1 Timothy 1:2)
    • __________ is probably in his 30’s at this point.  He was picked up by Paul as a young man and has spent 15 years traveling and working alongside the team of missionaries.
      • This is not Timothy’s first assignment

        • 1 Thessalonians 3:1-3
      • Timothy has been Paul’s right hand man for years.
        • Sending him to the church at Ephesus to turn things around and run it right is a natural fit.
      • Paul calls Timothy a “__________ in the faith”
        • Timothy was not a __________ child of Paul
        • But a __________ child – Paul saw his rebirth as a new creation in Christ and nurtured him from spiritual infancy to spiritual maturity.
        • We too should be raising up children in the faith that are not so by __________ age, but by __________ maturity.

        • Grace – God’s generous gift of forgiveness and salvation for us

          • We find peace in all the things that pass through our lives.
      • And a hint toward the Trinity: God three in one:
