Reflection

  • (1Ti 4:12 ESV) Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
  • (1Ti 4:13 ESV) Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.
  • (1Ti 4:14 ESV) Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you.
  • (1Ti 4:15 ESV) Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.
  • (1Ti 4:16 ESV) Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Discussion

Duplicity is defined as double-dealing.  That we might be one thing here, and another thing there.  We see this in politics certainly.  That a candidate tells us one thing before we elect them, then does something opposite once they are in power.  There is a measure of this in all of us, really.  That we say one thing yet do another.  We desire one way, but get drawn into another.

Of Christian life is not easy.  It is a war between a spirit made new in our salvation and a body of flesh inclined to disobey a holy God.  We feel that struggle to the things of God and yet find ourselves falling into the ways of the World.  Paul wrote of this in Romans 7:14-25.  Can you feel the emotion in his words as he writes of the real struggle in his life?  Can you relate?

Expansion

The Bible is the inspired Word of God given to His people and revealed by the Holy Spirit.  It is complete and without error in its content and given to individual believers with the intent of instructing them in who God is and transforming their lives according to His will.
