Reflection

  • (1Ti 6:6 ESV) But godliness with contentment is great gain,
  • (1Ti 6:7 ESV) for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.
  • (1Ti 6:8 ESV) But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.
  • (1Ti 6:9 ESV) But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
  • (1Ti 6:10 ESV) For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Discussion

If you had one million dollars, what would you do?  How has that changed as you have grown up?  From buying a Lamborghini to paying off debt to retiring, the goal of money tends to shift as we move through life doesn’t it?  Has the goal of your life grown more toward the will of your Savior?

Maybe as we mature we see what really matters more and focus our time, effort, and money on those things.  The closer we grow in faith to Christ, the more we realize what matters most of all is our relationship to the Savior and Lord of our lives.  All the time, stuff, and money we have in this world is really a gift from Him to use for His glory, not our own.

Maybe, just maybe, if we recognize all we have in Christ and the eternal security believers enjoy, we will begin to see that all the power and money of this world is a drop in the bucket for the christian’s life to come in heaven.  That realization will certainly help us to focus our lives on what really matters instead of chasing all the folly this world promises will fulfill us.

Connection

What does being content in godliness make you think of?

Name three ways God has provided for you this week:

  1.

  2.
  3.

Why is it so tempting to spend our time gaining wealth?

What is one major way you can keep in perspective the many things the world tells you are important?

How can we as the body of Christ encourage one another to a proper treatment of time, money, and motivation?
