Reflection

Colossians 1:16-17

(Col 1:16 ESV) For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through him and for him.

(Col 1:17 ESV) And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Discussion

Think of something you have complete control over.  Keep thinking.  Complete and total control.  Is there anything?

Chances are, the more you ponder that the less things come to mind.  The truth is, most of our lives – maybe all of them – are outside of our abilities to completely control.  If you life is a ship, you may have your hand on the wheel to steer, but the wind and the waves are not under your control.

An interesting scene unfolds in the New Testament when Jesus and His disciples are caught on a boat in a storm.  Jesus speaks and the sea goes dead calm.  In amazement, the disciples say, “Even the wind and the waves obey him.”

The story of Ruth shows us clearly that a sovereign God really is in control of all things.  He made all things. He knows all things.  He has the power to do all things.  He even has the authority over all things.  All things.  All of them.

While we steer our ships in life, He controls the wind and even the waves that are far beyond our ability to control in any way!

What an amazing God we serve!

Connection

How does trusting in a sovereign God who is over all things help to settle your mind in this world?

How can we increase our trust in the Lord by remembering He is sovereign over all things?

Knowing God is in control, how should we look on the seemingly random or happenstance things of life?

The Father

God the Father has eternally existed in the past and will eternally exist forever in the future.  He alone is the sovereign creator and supreme ruler of everything.  He is unchanging, omnipresent,  omnipotent, omniscient and entirely holy in every capacity.
