Devotional: Doctrines: The Bible

Reflection

The Bible is the inspired Word of God given to His people and revealed by the Holy Spirit.  It is complete and without error in its content and given to individual believers with the intent of instructing them in who God is and transforming their lives according to His will.

Discussion

The core of the Christian faith is the Word of God.  God gave us His word that we might know who He is and what His will is for this world.  But how do we know if the Bible is true?  Where did it come from?  Who wrote it?  How do we know it has not been tampered with over these thousands of years?  All of those (and more) are vital questions for us to ask as Christians.  While they might be hard to answer, we also have to remember the Holy Spirit was sent to God’s people to validate His Word and guide our lives.  We can always rest in that when we feel like uncertainty might overwhelm us.

Connection

Has there been a time when you just could not believe what the Bible said was true?

Has there been a time when the Word of God seemed more truthful than anything else you have known?

Why is it important in a Christian community to share the highs and the lows of our daily faith?

Spend some time this week praying and asking God to give you a passion for His Word.

Expansion

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the second member of the Trinity.  He is co-equal with God the Father and the Holy Spirit in all power, authority, and dominion in the universe.  He was co-creator and rules over all creation from heaven.  Jesus existed before the world began.  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the virgin Mary.  Jesus lived a sinless life and is the only sacrifice for our sins, dying on the cross, and defeating death forever.  He rose from the grave to return to heaven where He sits today.  Because of His perfect sacrifice we have eternal life as heirs of God. He will return to restore His kingdom and judge all people according to the will of God.
