Sunday Notes: James 1:13-18

  • (Jas 1:13 ESV) Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.
    • We are quick to blame for our failures – humans have been since the beginning
      • Genesis 3:9-13
    • Why is it so hard to own our failures?
  • (Jas 1:14 ESV) But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
    • Matthew 7:20-23
      • That desire is rooted in sin
        • Those inside yearnings for things against God
      • The challenge is not how to get away with these things
        • The challenge is how to overcome these things.
  • (Jas 1:15 ESV) Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
    • They develop
      • We get better and better at being worse and worse
    • Gives birth to sin
      • We want to
        • Then we do – we execute on the plans
    • And sin when it is grown brings forth death
      • So our sin separates us from God
        • Which is the very definition of eternal death
  • (Jas 1:16 ESV) Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.
    • Remember, James is writing to the church scattered
      • Galatians 6:6-9
        • Our minds are the fertile fields
          • This Word is the seed
          • The fruit of this crop is our action in righteousness
          • What will you do with that?
  • (Jas 1:17 ESV) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
    • Every good gift
      • Good gift is one word in the original
        • Translates to good thing, useful things
      • In the context here God gives us all useful things
        • To aid us in our journey
          • Not hinder us
        • To build a relationship with Him
          • Not tear it down
        • To grow us in faith and righteousness
          • Not to break us apart.
    • Perfect gift
      • Two words in the original
        • Perfect – Teleios – tel’-i-os – This means it is lacking in nothing to be completed
        • Gift -Dōrēma – do’-ray-mah – A gift, something given to you without merit, a bestowment.
          • Romans 5:12-17
      • See we serve a good God
        • Who is pleased with caring for His people
      • And we serve a great God
        • Who is absolute in His power
  • (Jas 1:18 ESV) Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
    • Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth
      • Because this pleased God
      • See God is sovereign
        • Completely and totally sovereign over all
      • And by His sovereign will
        • Because He determined to do this
      • He brought us forth
        • John 3:26-31, Ephesians 2:8-9
    • Firstfruits  – This is the idea of something or someone called apart from the rest and rolled into the rest to have an effect on it

Genesis 6:1-8, Romans 8
