- Often these are joyful and reverent

- Offering advice on life
- Royal psalms

- And their relationship with the Ethernal King, Christ
- Speaking of the earthly kings of Israel
- Imprecatory
- These are cursing psalms
- Those seeking God’s wrath to be poured out
- Pentential
- These offer confession
- And seek forgiveness
- Messianic
- Speak of the Messiah who was yet to come
- Ascent
- Songs of Ascent use of the journey to Jerusalem
- A sacred thing for the Jews
- Of the journey of this world looking to the next.
- Songs of Ascent use of the journey to Jerusalem
- Any given psalm may fit into any of these
- And even several of these at one time
- And thinking of these we can better understand the content of a given psalm
Music:
Reading:
- Ps 42
- This both a psalm of lament and a psalm of ascent
- Of lament – crying out to God
- Os ascent – of the journey of faith
- See if you can hear the words of those themes as we listen…
- This both a psalm of lament and a psalm of ascent
- Ps 42
- (Psa 42:1 ESV) To the choirmaster. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah. As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.
- (Psa 42:2 ESV) My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
- (Psa 42:3 ESV) My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?”
- (Psa 42:4 ESV) These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.
- (Psa 42:5 ESV) Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation
- (Psa 42:6 ESV) and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
- (Psa 42:7 ESV) Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me.
- (Psa 42:8 ESV) By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.
- (Psa 42:9 ESV) I say to God, my rock: “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
- (Psa 42:10 ESV) As with a deadly wound in my bones, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?”
- (Psa 42:11 ESV) Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.

Intro:
- What is psalm?
- Generally, songs.
- Poetry put to music usually.
- We miss some of the meter of those in translation
- But the meaning remains.
- Generally, songs.
- This one, as many of them were
- Was written by King David
- About 1,000 years before Jesus arrives
- David writes not of something he has experienced
- But inspired by the HS
- He writes of a future event
- The promised coming of the Messiah
- The King of Kings
- Whose rule will never cease
- This psalm is measured in chunks
- Overall the first half is prayer
- The second is praise
- These section of the psalm reflect a few psalm types
- Beginning as a lament
- And shifting into a praise
- All wrapped as a Messianic psalm
- Additionally it is part of a three pack including 22, 23, and 24 marking the person and work of Jesus, our Messiah.
- Overall the first half is prayer
- So we begin
- Christmas in the Psalms
- Christmas marks the birth of our Messiah
- Whose mission was to come into the world
- To save His people from their sins
- Culminating in His death and resurrection
- Then setting us in anticipation of His return and eternal rule in perfection
- Christmas marks the birth
- But that is not all
- It sets the stage for what Christ has done
- And what He will do.
- Christmas marks the birth

- (Psa 22:13 ESV) they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.
- (Psa 22:14 ESV) I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast;
- (Psa 22:15 ESV) my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.
- (Psa 22:16 ESV) For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet–
- (Psa 22:17 ESV) I can count all my bones– they stare and gloat over me;
- (Psa 22:18 ESV) they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
- (Psa 22:19 ESV) But you, O LORD, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid!

- (Psa 22:23 ESV) You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
- (Psa 22:24 ESV) For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.
- (Psa 22:25 ESV) From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
- (Psa 22:26 ESV) The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live forever!
- (Psa 22:27 ESV) All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.
- (Psa 22:28 ESV) For kingship belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations.
- (Psa 22:29 ESV) All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive.
- (Psa 22:30 ESV) Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
- (Psa 22:31 ESV) they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.
Exposition:
- (Psa 22:1 ESV) To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
- (Psa 22:2 ESV) O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.
- To the choirmaster
- This is one of 55 psalms to be directed to the choirmaster
- Who was the chief musician of the Jewish temple
- He would direct the choir in these songs
- And further instruction was given
- This is one of 55 psalms to be directed to the choirmaster
- According to the Doe of the Dawn
- This was the arrangement or the tune
- The song to follow
- A Psalm of David
- King David was the author of this psalm
- What would that be like in our age
- If the leader of our nation was penning songs to God
- We are not there yet
- But maybe closer than we have been in decades
- We are not there yet
- King David was the author of this psalm
- My God, My God Why have you forsaken me?
- Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
- My God My God
- Can you hear the cry of lament?
- The seeking of help from the Father
- Remeber that while this was written by David
- It is Messianic
- It is foreshadowing the life and work of our Messiah
- Of Jesus Christ.
- Can you hear the cry of lament?
- My God My God
- Why have you forsaken me?
- Remeber those words of ur Savior on the cross
- My God My God
- Why have you forsaken me?
- The seconds before He gave His last breath
- His perfect life ending to redeem our failures.
- Remeber those words of ur Savior on the cross
- My God My God
- O my God
- I cry by day
- But you do not answer
- And by night
- But I find no rest
- You’ve been there
- You have felt this
- Maybe you are there now
- In the stuggle
- In the pain
- Feeling alone
- You can relate to this
- Remeber Jesus just hours before His cruxificion
- In the garden
- Praying
- Sweating drops of blood it ws so intense.
- Crying out to God
- But finding no rest.
- It is this work He came
- That infant Jesus
- Born to Mary
- Immaculate conception
- A virgin birth
- A sinless man
- God in the flesh
- For this work
- To seek and tom save that which was lost
- Christmas begins in the manager
- It begins for this end.
- That your Savior would die to cover your sins.
- You’ve been there
- To the choirmaster
- (Psa 22:3 ESV) Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
- (Psa 22:4 ESV) In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.
- (Psa 22:5 ESV) To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
- Yet you are holy
- Enthroned on the praises of Israel.
- There is a comparison building here between the holy God
- And the man David who pens this Psalm
- A comparison that connects to us.
- Of the God we worship
- And the state of our fallen Flesg
- You, God are holy
- We are not
- You are enthroned on the praises of Israel
- You are worth of all praise
- You are high and lifted up
- We are not.
- There is a comparison building here between the holy God
- In you our Fathers trusted;
- They trusted, and you delivered them.
- To you they cried and were rescued
- In you they trusted and were not put to shame.
- Reflecting on the work of God
- We do the same
- When we are in the struggle
- When we are in the lament
- We remeber the faithfulness of God
- In the big things we know of Scripture
- And in the small things we have experienced in this life on earth
- In you, we trust, Lord
- As you saved Noah and his family from the flood, you are faithful
- As you parted the sea and saved the Israelites, you are faithful
- As you sent your own son to be the sacrifice for our sins
- You are faithful
- Your Son who left heaven
- To become a man like us
- In our fallen world
- In our sinful state
- Like us in flesh
- Yet sinless for our benefit.
- You are faithful
- Reflecting on the work of God
- (Psa 22:6 ESV) But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
- (Psa 22:7 ESV) All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
- (Psa 22:8 ESV) “He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
- You will recognize this scene…
- Matthew 27:39-43
- (Mat 27:39 ESV) And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads
- (Mat 27:40 ESV) and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
- (Mat 27:41 ESV) So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying,
- (Mat 27:42 ESV) “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
- (Mat 27:43 ESV) He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.'”
-
- But I am a worm and not a man
- This is not an isolated prophecy of the Messiah
- Job 25 mentions this, it says…
- Job 25:2-6
- 2: Dominion and fear are with God; He makes peace in His high heaven
- 3: Is there any number of His armies? Upon whom does His light not arise?
- 4: How then can man be in the right before God? How can he who is born of woman be pure?
- 5: Behold, even the moom is not bright, and the stars are not pure in His eyes.
- 6: How much less man, who is a maggot, and the don of man who is a worm.
- Job 25:2-6
- As does Isaiah 41:14
- 14…
- Fear not, you worm Jacob
- You men of Israel
- I am the one who helps you, declares the Lord
- Your redeemer is the Holy One of Israle
- 14…
- Job 25 mentions this, it says…
- This worm it mentions is the crimson worm
- A worm used to make red dye in ancient times
- This worm would attach itself to a tree
- Where it would die to deliver its offspring
- Those born to it only having life because of its life shed
- And that red dye…
- The offspring covered in it when they arose to life
- Covered in the crimson of the one who gave its life for theirs
- How amazing!
- Christ came to this world for this purpose
- And is called the worm
- Giving His life for ours
- Leaving us covered in His blood
- In that process we know He was…
- This is not an isolated prophecy of the Messiah
- Scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
- All who see me mock me
- They make mouths at me
- They wag their heads;
- He trusts in the LORD
- Let Him deliver him
- Let Him rescue Him
- For he delights in Him
- Such was our Messiah
- Such He endured
- Such was He born into this world to complete
- For you and for me.
- Such was our Messiah
- But I am a worm and not a man
- (Psa 22:9 ESV) Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.
- (Psa 22:10 ESV) On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
- (Psa 22:11 ESV) Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help.
- When we think about the Christmas story
- About the Christmas story there are thos familair themes
- And angels, those heavenly beings sent to announce this monumentous birth
- The shepherds, those lowely men who were first to see the Lord born
- The magi, those wisemen from afar bringig gifts
- Gifts that no double honored a king
- But would also provide support in these tumultous first years of life.
- But the angels came and went
- And the shepherds returned to their flocks
- And the wisemen left by another way to avoid Herod and his murdous plans
- Plans that sought to end the life of the Messiah long before the cross
- Before He anyone else evne knew.
- And there were Mary and Joseph
- Alone in another strange place with a baby boy
- Away from family
- Away from any resources
- Tasks with caring for the King of Kings.
- Without anyone else
- They were never
- Such it is in the work of the Lord
- We will never be alone
- And we will never be without.
- God can
- And God does provide for His people….
- And there were Mary and Joseph
- Matthew 2:13-15
- (Mat 2:13 ESV) Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”
- (Mat 2:14 ESV) And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt
- (Mat 2:15 ESV) and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
- Luke 2:39-40
- (Luk 2:39 ESV) And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.
- (Luk 2:40 ESV) And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.
- About the Christmas story there are thos familair themes
- Yet you are He who took me from the womb
- You made me trust you at my mothers breast.
- On you I was cast from my birth
- And from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
- Be not far from me
- For trouble is near
- And there is none to help.
- The life of Christ
- As it began
- And as we have been studying this year in the book of Luke
- It was a life of faith
- A life of trusting in God for all things.
- And as He went to the cross
- He went along
- All His closest friends had run away
- And the very people He came to save had turned their backs on Him
- To the cross He clung
- Naked
- Spit upon
- Dying for sins He did not commit
- Trusting in the Father
- For you and for me.
- David who wrote this psalm understood that struggle
- When all who were around Him seemed against Him
- Even his own son seeking to kill him and take the kingdom God had given him.
- The life of Christ
- When we think about the Christmas story
- (Psa 22:12 ESV) Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
- (Psa 22:13 ESV) they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.
- (Psa 22:14 ESV) I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast;
- (Psa 22:15 ESV) my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.
- Many bulls encompass me
- Strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
- The area of Bashan raised the biggest bulls
- From the finest pastures
- And they were considered the wildest as well
- Aggressive and untamable
- Akin to forces that no man could overpower
- The area of Bashan raised the biggest bulls
- They open wide their mouths at me
- Like a ravening and roaring lion.
- I am poured out like water
- And all my bones are out of joint
- My heart is like wax
- It is melted within my breast;
- My strength is dried up like a potsherd
- And my tongue sticks to my jaws
- You lay me in the dust of the earth.
- Picture your Messiah on the cross
- Surrounded by the crowds cheering on His death
- This body heaving as He slowly suffocated
- Hanging by His hands
- Nailed to the tree
- The life slowly draining from Him
- Hanging by His hands
- For this He came into the world that first Chrisrmas
- And by this we are saved eternally.
- Picture your Messiah on the cross
- (Psa 22:16 ESV) For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet–
- (Psa 22:17 ESV) I can count all my bones– they stare and gloat over me;
- (Psa 22:18 ESV) they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
- John 19:28-30
- (Jhn 19:28 ESV) After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”
- (Jhn 19:29 ESV) A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.
- (Jhn 19:30 ESV) When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
- John 19:28-30
-
- For dogs encompass me
- A company of evildoers encircles me
- They have pierced my hands and feet
- I can count all my bones
- They stare and gloat over me;
- They divide my garments among them
- And for my clothing they cast lots.
- Psalm 69:19-21
- (Psa 69:19 ESV) You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you.
- (Psa 69:20 ESV) Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.
- (Psa 69:21 ESV) They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
- Psalm 69:19-21
- (Psa 22:19 ESV) But you, O LORD, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid!
- (Psa 22:20 ESV) Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog!
- (Psa 22:21 ESV) Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!
- But you O LORD
- Do not be far off!
- O you my help
- Come quickly to my aid!
- As Christ gave His life
- It was not the end
- A life of faith trusting that God would see it through
- As Abraham trusted when called to sacrifice His own son
- That type given long before
- Paiting the picture of what was to come
- His son
- His only son
- As Abraham trusted when called to sacrifice His own son
- An example for us as we trust Christ in this life
- 2 Timothy 4:16-18 Pul writes…
- (2Ti 4:16 ESV) At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them!
- (2Ti 4:17 ESV) But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.
- (2Ti 4:18 ESV) The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
- Oh that we might life in that way
- That we might walk in the faith
- Trusting our God in all things.
- Oh that we might life in that way
- 2 Timothy 4:16-18 Pul writes…
- As Christ gave His life
- Deliver my soul from the sword
- My precious life from the power of the dog!
- Save me from the mouth of the lion!
- You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!
- This was the prayer of David, Christ, of Paul, and one of us….
- 1 Peter 5:8-11
- (1Pe 5:8 ESV) Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
- (1Pe 5:9 ESV) Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
- (1Pe 5:10 ESV) And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
- And in that movement our hearts lean into praise
- We know what God has done
- We see who God is
- We humbly worship His glory
- He is a good God
- And He is a great God
- Our Psalm reflects this movement
- In praise…
- And in that movement our hearts lean into praise
- (Psa 22:22 ESV) I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
- (Psa 22:23 ESV) You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
- (Psa 22:24 ESV) For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.
- I will tell of your name to my brothers
- In the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
- You who fear the Lord
- That is His people
- We are His people
- That is His people
- Praise Him!
- We praise Him
- In this life we praise Him
- In our death we will praise Him
- For all eternity we will get to praise the Lord!
- All you offspring of Jacob
- Glorify Him
- And stand in awe of Him
- All you offspring of Israel!
- For He has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted
- And He has not hidden His face from him
- But has heard when he cried to Him
- We stand in awe of God
- Of the gift of His Son
- Of the gift of our salvation
- Of the gift of our future in eternity
- Hebrews 2:10-13 reflect this
- (Heb 2:10 ESV) For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.
- (Heb 2:11 ESV) For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,
- (Heb 2:12 ESV) saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”
- (Heb 2:13 ESV) And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”
- Have you put your trust in Him?
- Your faith in the Messiah?
- Have you put your trust in Him?
- We stand in awe of God
- (Psa 22:25 ESV) From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
- (Psa 22:26 ESV) The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live forever!
- What a wonderful honor it is that we get to sere this great God
- That He would do this for us that we might live in Him
- Forever!
- That He would do this for us that we might live in Him
- What a wonderful honor it is that we get to sere this great God
-
- From you comes my praise in the great congregation
- My vows I will perform before those who fear Him.
- The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
- Those who seek Him shall praise the Lord!
- May your hearts live forever!
- (Psa 22:27 ESV) All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.
- (Psa 22:28 ESV) For kingship belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations.
- A glimpse into the coming work from Christ’s sacrifice
- The coming return of His presence in this world
- The coming restoration of all things!
- A glimpse into the coming work from Christ’s sacrifice
-
- All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD
- And all the families of the nations shall worship before you.
- For kingship belongs to the LORD
- And He rules over the nations.
- Revelation 7:9-12
- (Rev 7:9 ESV) After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,
- (Rev 7:10 ESV) and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
- (Rev 7:11 ESV) And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,
- (Rev 7:12 ESV) saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
- Revelation 11:15-19
- (Rev 11:15 ESV) Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”
- (Rev 11:16 ESV) And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God,
- (Rev 11:17 ESV) saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.
- (Rev 11:18 ESV) The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”
- (Rev 11:19 ESV) Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.
- These are glorious things we should look forward to in gratitude
- We know and have covered that this plan of Christ was at work since the beginning
- Since before the foundations of the earth this was the plan
- That an all knowing and all powerful God
- Would send His son to save His people
- We celebrate that coming in Christmas
- We celebrate that sacrifice in His death
- We celebrate the victory in His resurrection
- And we look forward to His return and eternal rule forever
- We know and have covered that this plan of Christ was at work since the beginning
- These are glorious things we should look forward to in gratitude
- Revelation 7:9-12
- (Psa 22:29 ESV) All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive.
- (Psa 22:30 ESV) Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
- (Psa 22:31 ESV) they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.
- Romans 5:19-21
- (Rom 5:19 ESV) For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
- (Rom 5:20 ESV) Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
- (Rom 5:21 ESV) so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
- Romans 5:19-21
-
- All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
